MARIAN MCPARTLAND (pianist, broadcaster, composer, writer) was born March 20, 1918 in England. Influenced by the great Mary Lou Williams, McPartland is the celebrated host of the long running “Marian McPartland’s Piano Jazz” on NPR - often performing with the who’s who of the jazz world. Accepted at the prestigious Guildhall School of Music at 17, Marian left school to tour with Billy Mayerl, perform in vaudeville, and entertain troops during World War II. Marrying cornetist Jimmy McPartland, she relocated to the U.S. becoming part of the vibrant jazz scene of 1950s New York and appearing in the iconic photograph “A Great Day in Harlem”. Among her many honours are a Grammy for Lifetime Achievement and an Order of the British Empire in 2010.
