RAY DRUMMOND (bassist, composer, arranger, bandleader, educator) was born November 23, 1946 in Brookline, Massachusetts. The well travelled son of a Army colonel, Drummond originally played trumpet and French horn, taking up bass at age 14. While earning a B.A. in Political Science at Stanford University he performed with Bobby Hutcherson, Tom Harrell and Eddie Marshall among others and eventually chose a musical career after a move to New York in 1977. In addition to working with Betty Carter, Kenny Barron, Joe Locke and numerous other artists he has led his own groups including Excursion, The Quartet and The Drummonds with Billy Drummond and Renee Rosnes. A noted educator he is currently Assistant Professor of Jazz,,Theory and Practice at California State University.
