JOHN SCOTT MacMURCHY (tenor, alto, and baritone saxophonist, clarinetist, flutist, pianist) was born March 20, 1958 in Collingwood, Ontario, Canada.
John MacMurchy is a multi-faceted musician-composer currently living in Toronto. He has performed and recorded in Canada. Great Britain. France. Greece and the United States. According to recent statistics. his second independent CD release, Outside the Ministry of Truth was getting airplay on at least 450 radio stations in eight countries on three continents.
MacMurchy has performed as a sideman for Henry Mancini, Cleo Laine, Eartha Kitt, Linda Ronstadt, Guido Basso and a host of R&B stars. He is also well grounded in the classical and twentieth century art music repertoire and his compositions reflect these diverse influences while remaining cohesive and original. He is a key player in many of today’s finest ensembles including his own John MacMurchy Quintet and Trio, Nimmons ‘n’ Nine Now, the Toronto Art Ensemble, N’Awlins All Stars, Hotfoot, the Kira Callahan Quartet, Swing Rosie, the Sherie Marshall Quintet, the Julie Michels group, and the Brigham Phillips Big Band.
John MacMurchy performed with Mike Cado’s Nimmons ‘n’ Nine Now tribute band in the “Sound of Toronto Jazz” ConcertSeries on March 3, 2003.
