ALEXIS BARO (trumpeter, flugelhornist) was born into a musical family in Havana, Cuba. Classically trained, he took up the trumpet as a youngster, pursuing his music studies until ultimately receiving a teaching certification from Havana’s Amadeo Roldan Music Institute.
Best known as a Latin jazz specialist, Baro began exploring a multiplicity of other musical styles after moving to Toronto in 2001, embracing not only the jazz genre but adding R&B, funk, and Calypso, working with a diverse list of artists that included Ruben Vazquez, Evaristo Machado, Cassava, David Rudder, The Clash, Son Ache, and Kollage. His artistic abilities led to more high-profile engagements, too, backing touring entertainment names including The Temptations, Donny Osmond, Sheena Easton, and Jon Secada.
In early 2008, he released his debut CD, “Havana Banana”, featuring a sextet of some of the most accomplished players on the Toronto's jazz roster.
Alexis has been nominated for Best Trumpet Player at the National Jazz Awards for 2005, 2006 and 2007 and is co-winner of a Juno as well as a Gemini for best live performance with Kollage.
